The President of the
Union of Liberians in the U.S., Mr.
Emmanuel Wettee has nominated Mr. Amos
Koukou as the new chairman of the
elections commission of the Union.
In his letter to the
Chairman of the Board of ULAA, Mr. James
Larsah, Mr. Wettee said, “I am pleased
to nominate Mr. Amos Z. Koukou as
Chairman of the National Elections
Commission. Mr. Koukou will replace Mr.
Benoni T. Grimes, whose term on the
Commission expired in August 2007.
In his letter to Mr.
Larsah describing Mr. Koukou, he said,
“Mr. Koukou is, already a member of the
Elections Commission," and he "has
demonstrated his commitment and
competence to steer the affairs of the
Commission" He is an active member of
the Liberian Association of
Pennsylvania, Inc., in which he served
on the Board as Co-Chairman.
Academically, Mr. Koukou
is a doctoral candidate at the Widener
University in Chester, Pennsylvania. On
the Liberian national front, Mr. Koukou
once served as Deputy Managing Director
of the National Port Authority in
Monrovia, Liberia.
Also nominated were the
co-chair and other members of the
commission. Mr. Seakah B. Saygbachee
will serve if co-chair if confirmed.
Mr. Saygbachee will assist the Chairman
of the Commission until the expiry of
his term in July 2009 in keeping with
the ULAA Constitution which allows for
service on the organ for three years.
Mr. Saygbachee is one of two
Commissioners who still have terms
extending to cover the ULAA 2008
Election year.
Mr. Wettee also nominated
the following individuals to the ULAA
National Elections Commission, and
forwarded their names for
confirmation.

Ms. Minerva
Grant Member Organization of
Liberians in Minnesota (OLM)
Mr. Artemus
Gaye Member Organization of the
Liberian Community Association in
Illinois (OLCI)
Mr. Frank
Carter Member Federation of
Liberian Associations in Ohio (FOLAO)
Mr. Wettee in his letter
to Mr. Larsah expressed and reiterated
his hope that the National Board of
Directors will speedily confirm the
nominees to augment the strength of the
National Elections Commission as the
election period starts.
Three other members of
the Elections still have terms extending
to February 2008. These commissioners
are Ms. Julia Whitfield of North Jersey,
Mr. Kai Wleh of Washington, D.C., and
Mr. Ansu Pelima of Ohio. The terms of
these three commissioners expire on
February 3, 2008.
Meanwhile, the ULAA
elections will start to heat up in the
next months as candidates position
themselves to garner votes. The current
people known to be vying for the
positions are Mr. Anthony Kesselly, Dr.
Mariah Seton and Mr. Abraham Massaley.
