Dear Ms. Grant:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me. I always enjoy hearing from people back home in Wisconsin, and would like to take this opportunity to address your concerns as they relate to Liberian Immigration status.

As you know, Senator Jack Reid introduced S. 656, the "Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act of 2007," on February 16, 2007.  The bill would adjust the status of certain Liberians to lawful permanent residents. The Senate referred this bill for consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 16, 2007.

I have always been supportive of reunifying families through our immigration law.  For example, I have introduced the "Family Reunification Act of 2007," S. 703.  Under current law, parents of U.S. citizens are able to enter the country as legal permanent residents, but they cannot bring their other young children with them. The legislation would fill this gap by including minor siblings of U.S. citizens in the definition of "immediate relative."

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate having the benefits of your views, and will keep them in mind should the Judiciary Committee take up this issue.

Sincerely,

Herb Kohl

U.S. Senator
