The Executive Committee of the National Board of Directors of the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) is expressing profound thanks and appreciation to the National President of the Union Hon. Anthony V. Kesselly for the very efficient manner in which he represented the Union in Liberia.  It can be recalled that President Kesselly went to Liberia at a short-noticed invitation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to participate in the National Conference on Reconciliation.

Affairs Building in Monrovia on Thursday, June 25, 2009

The Board Executive Committee  notes with satisfaction the crucial role President Kesselly played during the Conference deliberations, especially his forceful and persuasive advocacy for the rights of Liberians living in the Diaspora to participate in the democratic process of electing national leaders, dual citizenship, and the call for the establishment of a war crime tribunal if individuals who perpetrated heinous crimes against the Liberian people continued their arrogance and entitlement mentality instead of been remorseful and seeking forgivingness from the Liberia people for havoc they wreaked upon the nation.

As a direct result of President Kesselly’s leadership and passionate advocacy on these matters, former warlords attending the conference joined the chorus of apology for their acts during the fourteen years civil war. Most importantly, the Conference also adopted as one of its resolutions out of country voting for Diaspora Liberians.

The Board Executive Committee is particularly gratified that President Kesselly did not stop his advocacy at the TRC forum, but also held frank and fruitful discussions on these important issues of national concern with the President of the Republic of Liberia, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the Speaker of the House Representatives Hon. Alex  Tyler, the President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate Hon. Cletus Wortorson, and other Legislative leaders, as well as the Chairman of the National Elections Commission Hon. James Fromayan.

The Board Executive Committee expresses profound thanks to Liberian President Sirleaf, the Leadership of the National Legislature, the TRC, and the National Elections Commission for the warm reception accorded President Kesselly, and for creating the forum for the discussion of  issues that are critical to Diaspora Liberians and Liberia.  The Board Leadership welcomes the agreement in principle by President Sirleaf and all the major stakeholders on the key issues of out of country voting and dual citizenship.

Headquarters in Sinkor, Monrovia, Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Having established such a common ground, it is the view of the Board Executive Committee that ULAA and the Government of Liberia will now begin the process of establishing both practical and legal modalities that will lead to the realization of Diaspora Liberians finally participating in the democratic process and enjoying the benefits and responsibilities of dual citizenship. The Board Executive Committee expresses absolute confidence in the ability of President Kesselly as a true and reliable partner with the Government of Liberia in navigating all issues regarding these matters.

Finally, the Board Executive Committee calls on ULAA member chapters, other Liberian organizations, and friends of Liberia to coalesce their efforts with ULAA to ensure the enfranchisement of Liberians for the 2011 elections, and ensure the passage of the dual citizenship legislation which bears enormous benefits for Liberia. It is the view of the Executive Committee of the Board that these issues are too important to be dwarfed by petty differences and squabbles. The Board Leadership, thus, calls on all Liberians to join the forward march for greater democratic freedom, social justice, genuine reconciliation and peace.

Signed
